The enterotoxin in cell free products of various strains, of Cl. perfringens type A has the ability to produce loop fluid accumulation in rabbits. Rabbits ileal loops challenged with cell extract and culture of various strains revealed an intestinal reposes by accumulation of dissension and histopathological changes. The enterotoxin was shown to be heat labile and its activity at pH values 1 and 12. It was inactivated by protease but not by amylase, lipase or trypsin enzymes.
